Every quote is built for your placement, because the work behind a USU placement changes with your program, hours, state and timeline. After a short conversation about your course, you get a written quote and terms, and nothing starts until you've read and accepted them.

Why every quote is built for you
The same request, “I need a preceptor,” covers very different searches at USU. An FNP student who needs a family practice preceptor for FNP592 six months out is asking for a different job from one who needs pediatric and women's health coverage for FNP596 with ten weeks to go. One posted number would be wrong for most people reading it.
So the price follows the conversation. Use the form or the chat, and the placement desk replies by chat, text or email to ask about your program, course number, session and state. Then you get a quote for that work, in writing, and you can ask questions and take your time before deciding. How it works shows what happens after you accept.
What shapes your quote
Six things move the scope of the work, and your quote names the ones that apply to you:
- Program and course. Each FNP practicum has its own setting rules, and Nurse Educator, Health Care Leadership, RN-to-BSN and DNP placements call for different kinds of preceptor or mentor.
- Hours to cover. Each FNP practicum is 135 hours,
MSN578andMSN587are 100 each, and the RN-to-BSN practicum is 90 hours across two courses with the same agency leader. One course is a different job from planning several. - Your state. Preceptors must be licensed where you train, New Jersey allows one student per FNP preceptor instead of two, and a few states ask USU for extra paperwork before clinicals.
- Timeline. A search that starts six months out has room. One that starts inside USU's 16-week window has far less, since USU's approval steps keep their own pace.
- In person or virtual. In person near you is the standard route. Any telehealth time has to fit USU's rules, which narrows who can precept it.
- Paperwork help. How much support you want with Appendix H and its exhibits, the license verification and CV, and the site details for the Affiliation Agreement.
What the written quote and terms cover
You get the quote and terms in writing before you commit to anything. They answer the questions a careful student asks before hiring help:
- The program, course or courses, and session the work covers
- What we do: the search, help with the preceptor packet, and a new search if a preceptor drops
- How the work fits USU's process: you submit to USU, and USU gives the final approval
- The price, how and when it's paid, and anything outside it, such as a fee a preceptor or site sets on its own
- Cancellation and refund terms
Keep a copy of the terms and a receipt for anything you pay, so the agreement is always in front of you.
What USU's catalog says about placement fees
USU's 2026-27 catalog (pp. 86–87) says preceptors and sites may charge their own fees, that USU doesn't set or regulate them, and that students arrange and pay them directly with the preceptor, site or placement service. It also asks students who use a placement service to pass USU's requirements along to it.
Whoever finds the preceptor, the Program Director and the OFE make the decision. What our fee buys is the work that gives their review the best start: a preceptor who fits your course and a packet that is complete when it arrives.
USU's own Office of Field Experience help comes with your program, and we found no separate charge for it in the catalog's fee tables. Compare routes on self-placement, OFE help and outside help.
Other clinical costs USU students carry
A quote from us is one line in the cost of a USU practicum. USU's catalog and handbooks list other costs you cover yourself, whichever placement route you take:
- Complio by American DataBank, for immunization tracking and the background and drug screen packages
- Your own malpractice policy at the limits on the PAC checklist, with “NP Student” on it for FNP students
- Travel anywhere in your state, at your own expense
- Course fees listed in the catalog, including a technology fee on FNP and DNP courses and the
MSN572immersion fee - A repeated course, if a placement falls through and you have to withdraw and retake

Questions our written terms answer
Our terms answer each of these in writing before you pay, and they're the right questions to put to anyone you consider:
- Does the quote name my USU course, session and state, or is it generic?
- Will the preceptor meet USU's rules for this course: type, board certification, license state and student ratio?
- Does the plan leave approval with USU and build the timeline around its review?
- What happens if the Program Director denies the preceptor, or the preceptor drops mid-course?
- Are cancellation and refund terms written down?
- Is any preceptor or site fee included, or separate?

Questions USU students ask
Is the quote different for FNP and Nurse Educator students?
It can be, because program and hours are two of the things that shape a quote. FNP students need four 135-hour practicums in set settings with an NP, MD or DO preceptor. A Nurse Educator needs one 100-hour teaching residency in MSN578 with an MSN- or doctorally prepared preceptor at a 1:1 ratio.
Does paying for placement help speed up USU's approval?
No. The Program Director's review, the Affiliation Agreement and Complio all run on USU's clock, whoever found the preceptor. Review averages 4–16 weeks, and USU says to allow four to six months for a new agreement. What a search can change is how early a qualified preceptor reaches USU.
Does a virtual arrangement cost less?
Not necessarily. Virtual time at USU is narrow: FNP telehealth is capped at 40 hours for the whole program, the preceptor must be physically with you, and patients must be in your state on file. Finding a preceptor who runs video visits and will have you in the room is still an in-person search.
Can I cancel after I accept a quote?
The cancellation and refund terms are in the written terms you get before you commit, so read that section before you accept and keep a copy with a receipt for every payment. If any part of it is unclear, ask the placement desk before you sign.
